Girl Crush journeyed to her Grandmother’s homeland of Cuba with her sister & two friends to experience the home that her Grandmother had to flee because of religious persecution when Castro came into power. Crush heard the detailed story of the escape as a child and always wanted to go back for her Grandmother, a place that her Grandmother will never return to. Being raised in a family rooted in Catholicism, Crush’s Father is a deacon, she tends to weave religious imagery with common every day experiences with sexually saturated heightened aesthetics.
Crush’s new single, “Daisy”, does just that telling the story of a sexually empowered woman who finds herself pregnant and committed to her child’s wellbeing no matter what. While in Cuba, Crush was blessed by a Priestess who gave her the blessing of Oshun who is her Orisha. A blessing Crush does not take lightly and was an incredibly meaningful experience in her journey there. Crush’s childhood best friend, Karlyn Bell, shot the music video for a study aboard photography class they took during their pilgrimage and the whole creative process was rooted in an authentic experience: no fancy lighting or crew. Crush didn’t even have a mirror to get ready, but she had her love for family, her friends, and telling the story of “Daisy”.
