Miss Tackett, a white teacher, taught mostly Latino and Black students in a public school in the barrio of El Paso, TX. There are many teachers like Miss Tacket that helped poor kids advance in life to become doctors, lawyers and engineers. Her students would be assigned to read this about William Shakespeare, that about Geoffrey Chaucer and other writers, but the same students are telling her they do not want to read the novel War and Peace (by Leo Tolstoy) which has over 1000 pages.
She would also recite stories about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens in the school located in the Second Ward in El Paso, TX, which is Segundo Barrio in Spanish, the first neighborhood Del Segundo lived in when they immigrated to the United States as a kid – thus the name of the group, Del Segundo which means From the Second (Ward). The trolley they are in passes through the Segundo Barrio, Downtown, and UTEP.
