Born in Detroit, Michigan of Iraqi descent, Julian grew up in two worlds and stems from a long musical lineage. His paternal grandfather performed as part of the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra for over 20 years, and his father is a renowned pianist. Julian first learned to play the classical guitar, piano, and write songs at the site of his father’s music school in Dubai. At just eight years old, while still honing his piano and guitar skills, he started to rap. At 16-years-old, he got his first midi keyboard and began to teach himself music production. The multi-instrumentalist, rapper, and producer, brings a decidedly global perspective to his music and hip-hop culture.
Going into the inspiration behind the single Julian says that “It’s about a girl I used to date, who lost herself in her problems – emotionally and mentally. “She was trying to always fit in and compete with her female friends and all I wanted to do was empower her and let her know that she doesn’t have to worry about what other people think, that she’s got it!” And speaking on his collaboration with Jeremih, he explains that “I just knew Jeremih would be able to bring that softer, R&B element to it which I was drawn to having on the song.”
