“Standard Deviations” is a 2-volume collection of the greatest Jazz Standards of all time… reimagined. Tunes deviate into one another, styles deviate into related genres and arrangements deviate from the standard originals. Contemporary jazz musicians bind together blues, funk, fusion, progressive rock, new age, post-bop and smooth jazz, depending on the arrangement. 33 classics arranged into 24 tracks over 2 CDs.
Hip, fresh version of the first and greatest blues-jazz tune, St. Louis Blues, moves between funk and jazz, blues and rock. Drummer Lamar Moore lays down the funky rhythm while blues guitarist Paul Nelson (3-time Grammy winner) provides the fire. But the conversational interplay is all contemporary jazz, with pianist Tobin Mueller (who solos on the B3 organ as well) and saxophonist Woody Mankowski exchange great moments trading 2s and 4s. The visuals of the video highlight the wealth of music available on the CD as a whole, a 2-volume collection of the greatest Jazz Standards… reimagined. 33 classics arranged into 24 tracks over 2 CDs. Every track is inventive, masterfully played, and extremely entertaining. Paul Nelson won his Grammies playing with the likes of Johnny Winter and Eric Clapton, but the chops he shows in this new jazz-bent environment bring his playing to a new level. Still, the arrangements what stands out, taking an old masterpiece bringing it into the modern world.
